Well this festival is not about the lighting of Diyas and Candles, it is more than that. We Indians have many different rituals, traditions and customs to follow with each and every festivals like that Diwali is also having different form of arrangements which are needed to make this festival worth celebrating. Let me start with a small description, Diwali is the festival for light and brightness. It is the festival having all sort of customs and rituals.

Lakshmi Puja:
We offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi on diwali for her blessings. Goddess Lakshmi gives prosperity and wealth to those who believe in Her. We worship Her on deepavali so that rest of the year, Her prosperity remains with us .

Lighting Diyas and Candles:
This festival is about the lightning diyas, candles and Ghee lamps. After the prayer is over, people starts decorating their houses with lighted lamps, candles and diyas. They believe that lightning lamps will help them to get the rid of darkness from the world and some believed that its shows the path to Goddess Lakshmi of our doorsteps.
So , we let the diyas to burn all night which means we are welcoming the Goddess Lakshmi.

Worshipping of Cattle:
Another prevalent tradition is the worshipping of cattles by their respective farmers. According to farmers, they are their primary source of wealth so they treat their cattles like God. In some other part , cows are worshipped as Goddess Lakshmi. They decorate their cattles with roli and different colors and hang bells around their neck.

Make and Decorate Rangoli:
Do you know rangoli is Sanskrit word, which means design prepared with help of colors. The designs are created with the help of materials like colored rice,dry flour, sand and flower petals. Basically, rangoli is made for welcoming of Goddess Lakshmi. During Diwali , people clean their houses and decorate them with hangings, torans and colourful rangolis.

Cracking Firecrackers:
Diwali celebration is not completed without the fireworks and crackers. Actually, this is the most important part for which the youngster awaits. The bursting of crackers is not done without any particular reason. Children burst fire crackers for their fun but actually this is done for keeping away all evil spirits from home.

Other Common Diwali Tradition and Customs :

Diwali puja is performed with great joy and happiness. The puja rituals are performed in the evening to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. Bhajans are sung in praise of Goddess and we offered them sweets and others items. Diwali puja is a combination of five deities:
Lord Ganesha is worshipped at the beginning which act as Vighnaharta
Goddess Lakhsmi is worshipped in her three different avatars : Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati and Mahakali.
Kuber is also worshipped by the people – The Treasurer of the Gods.
